CD, DVD & optical media shredders

Optical discs aren't magnetic, so a degausser does nothing to them — the data has to be physically destroyed. Allegheny shredders destroy CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs on your own site, alongside the drives and media you already shred.

For discs alongside drives and media

The hard drive and SelecShred™ lines for discs with drives, and the Particle Cut line for discs in bulk with mixed media.

Shred size and throughput for optical media depend on the machine — get in touch for details.

Destruction standards

We build to recognized standards including NIST SP 800-88 and DIN 66399. Tell us the standard and level you work to and we'll confirm the configuration.

NIST SP 800-88

The US guidelines for media sanitization. They set out three methods: Clear, Purge and Destroy. Shredding is a Destroy method, the highest of the three.

DIN 66399

The international standard that grades shred size into security levels, separately for each type of material. The media on this page fall under class O.

  • P · paper, film and printing forms
  • O · optical media — CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray
  • T · magnetic media — data tape, floppy disks, ID cards
  • H · hard drives
  • E · electronic media — SSDs, USB sticks, memory cards

Common questions

Can a degausser erase a CD or DVD?

No. Degaussing works on magnetic media only; optical discs store data in the disc itself, so they have to be physically destroyed. See degausser vs shredder.

Can I shred discs in the same machine as hard drives?

Yes — the hard drive, SelecShred™ and Particle Cut lines take discs as well. Tell us your mix and volume and we'll confirm the machine.

How small is the shred?

It depends on the machine — get in touch for details.
